Amazing Guests.
October 30th, 2024
I've been incredibly busy! Our first two guests were from an organization called Community Bible Study. My pastor is also involved, which is how they know each other. These two lovely women, in their later years, had inspiring testimonies and shared profound wisdom. They even hosted a training session here for local leaders.
After that, three of my friends and I attended an unreached ministry conference in the main city. There were numerous speakers, some of them even spoke English! Their messages were impactful, to say the least. The question, "Will you follow Jesus to the ends of the earth?" always cuts deep. Even as I am so far from home, I find myself continually drawn to finalize my answer to that question. It truly is a lifelong process. My pastor, who has been doing unreached ministry for 15+ years, is preparing me to join him, though he says I wouldn't survive yet haha! "You have to learn many things about (country), you must find the crisis before giving a solution."
Side Note: I’ll elaborate on finding the crisis in my private newsletter. If you’re interested, feel free to email me at caleb.t2t@gmail.com!
Continuing on, I went on a "short walk" with the kids while we waited for our next guests to arrive. This stroll took us several hundred feet up to a nice pond. Even the youngest, just five years old, climbed like a goat! I'm overjoyed to have a group of little sisters around—always watching me, asking to play games three times a day, and laughing at me. The fun never ends with them!
That night, we welcomed three guests—two from the U.S. and one from a neighboring country. I had met one of them during my trip in May, so it was great to see him again. They were here for a couple of days, focusing on reconciliation ministry with the church. This was an intense class taught to a group of over ten local pastors, centered on addressing childhood hurts and the steps toward forgiveness and reconciliation. Such an important lesson, echoing Matthew 6:15: "But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins."
We have some exciting teaching opportunities to look forward to soon. I’ve already started teaching the kids in the home, and I will begin at the school on November 12th. Thanks for reading!
Village Life.
October 14th, 2024
Time flies! It’s been a great couple of weeks building new relationships, learning how to shop, and becoming familiar with the area. Recently, I traveled a few hours on a bumpy road to attend a Christian conference in a village. Life there is quite different from my daily routine at the children’s home. The village is nearly self-sustained through their farms, living simple with much less. However, you would be surprised by the joy in their hearts through their salvation.
The conference was a wonderful experience, filled with powerful prayer and worship. The villagers were incredibly welcoming and eager to teach me about their language and culture. During our two-night stay in the church, I listened to about eight hours of sermons in the local language—great practice for me! Unfortunately, the village has recently lost over 100 houses due to a massive landslide, and the church is precariously situated on the edge of the drop-off. (You can find some pictures on the www.teaching2transform.org photos page.) The pastor will need to relocate before next year's rains, so please pray for him and the village with all your might.
After returning from the conference, we had a relaxing day playing games with the kids. In some of these games, I definitely have an unfair advantage due to my height, lol. We grilled corn over the fire, and one of the kids made some salsa with three chilies, tomato, lemon juice, and seasoning—it was spicy, to say the least! Lastly, we visited my pastor’s brother-in-law, who is the president of the school where I’ll be teaching. He is very kind and soft-spoken, and I am excited to start improving the school’s English curriculum—and he is, too.
Arrival!
October 5th, 2024
After a very long trip, I've made it to my destination! It's so beautiful here; I'm enjoying every moment. I visited the school yesterday and met with the president to talk about what all I will be doing there. He told me that their language skills are very poor right now, so it will be difficult, but I will start with the basics. Since over half of their textbooks are in English, better reading and writing skills are crucial. Even though it will be challenging, they are delighted to have me there to improve everyone's English, even the teachers. The kids are just finishing their exams this week, and they will be going on vacation until November.
For this month, I will be doing some traveling with my pastor and his son. It's not common in the culture here to plan things too far out, so I am just going with the flow. On the 8th, I know I will be going to a village a few hours away for a conference. I am praying for good fellowship and new friends. I met a lot of the people from my town that are going last night at worship night. Even with the language barrier, we are able to laugh together and enjoy worship.
This was a short one, but I'm sure these next few weeks will be very eventful, so I will be sending out newsletters as needed! Thank you for being a part of this. I hope you are well!
What? You're going back?
May, 2024
This is my first Newsletter! Welcome to the start of my journey! I went on a wonderful short-term missions trip to South Asia in May 2024, it lasted just over a couple weeks. While I was there, I was on a walk with my good friend who is a pastor there. He asked me, "What do you plan on doing when you return home?" I replied with, "I'm not too sure, I've been a little exhausted with working my current job. I'm thinking of moving overseas somewhere to teach English as a second language." The pastor then invited me to come live at the children's home and teach at their school. Naturally, It wasn't exactly what I had in mind, so I told him I'd think about it. Once again, towards the end of the trip, he asked me the same question, and shared some details on what it'd be like. This time, I thought about it some more, and was still indecisive, so I told him I would pray about it and await an answer. So I did. I was in the car with my brother on the way home, and I told him about the opportunity. It was then that I was convicted by the Lord in my heart that I was to go back and teach English, and share the good news. Shocking at first, but after a while it had set in. So much of my life has been preparing me for this, so Praise God! I am now working hard on finding and getting connected to you, the supporters ;) Thank you for showing interest and helping this calling come to fruition.
